How Long Can You Hoist?

We had such a great time last night at the Samuel Adams Stein-Hoisting competition at the Iron Monkey. Dozens of competitors tried their hardest to keep their steins up to win the chance to be part of the national hoisting competition. The national winners – one male and one female – will win a trip to the 2012 Oktoberfest celebration in Munich, Germany.

The rules were pretty simple: At the start of each heat, all contestants had to hold up their filled stein parallel to the ground, with a completely straight arm. That’s it. The second anyone started to bend their arm, or started to spill, they were out.

We had some awesome competitors, including Brian, who kept it going for 7 minutes and 32 seconds. But the winner of the night, and the current national champion, is Rob, who hoisted his stein for a full 8 minutes and 12 seconds – now, that’s impressive!

Good luck, Rob, and thanks to everyone who came out and made the night so much fun!

A Growler A Day...

True craft beer fans know and love the growler. In case you’re not familiar, it’s a half-gallon glass jug that’s filled with delicious beer, and carried directly from our draft to your house.

The Iron Monkey has a growler program that allows you to buy a growler, fill it with your draft of choice, and take it home. Or, you can drink it in the bar. Or, on a street corner….okay, maybe not that. But the idea is that you can take your favorite drafts anywhere you’d like. Each empty growler costs a one-time fee of $5, plus the cost of your chosen draft. Once you buy a growler, it’s numbered for each individual, so you can be sure that you’re always getting your personal growler each time you bring it back. And if you’d like, the Iron Monkey will even store it for you at the bar, safe and sound. The Monkey always has about 40 drafts on our ever-changing tap list, so it’s a great way to stock up on your favorites.

We also just partnered with New Jersey Beer Growlers, a site that helps people find bars, distributors, and retailers that offer growlers. We’re the first bar to list our growlers on the site, and we’re hoping that more people take advantage of this awesome program. Check it out at: http://njbeergrowlers.info/.

Samuel Adams Stein-Hoisting Competition

Join us at the Iron Monkey on Thursday, September 15th for your chance to become the 2011 Samuel Adams National Stein Hoisting Champion. Festivities start at 7 p.m.

The two hoisters – one male and one female – who hold up a stein of Samuel Adams the longest will be crowned the Samuel Adams National Stein Hoisting Champions and will receive the Grand Prize – a trip for two to the 2012 Oktoberfest celebration in Munich, Germany.

Participants will be timed as they compete to be the last man (and woman) standing.

The rules are simple:

- Steins Up: Participants must use one arm only to hold their stein perfectly straight in front of them, parallel to the floor.

- Sipping and Spilling: Once a participant starts to spill, or begins to drop or bend their arm – they’re out!

- Time Matters: Even if a local challenger is the last one hoisting, keep those steins in the air! All times are entered into the national competition, so every second counts.

Everyone who enters will receive a Samuel Adams pint glass. So come out and join the fun!
