Authentic Trappist Beers

This Thursday, we’re so excited to host Bobo Van Mechelen, the American Ambassador for Chimay at The Iron Monkey!

If you haven’t been lucky enough to try Chimay, you’ll have plenty of opportunity at our event – we’ll have bottles of Chimay Red, Chimay White, and Chimay Blue on hand, and will be tapping Chimay White as well.

Not only a delicious brew, what makes Chimay truly unique is that it’s Trappist beer…which means that it’s beer that is exclusively brewed by Trappist monks. There are only seven Trappist monstaries that produce beer – one in the Netherlands, and six in Belgium, including Chimay.

That means that Chimay, brewed at the Notre-Dame de Scourmont Abbey, is one of only a handful of beers that can carry the logo “Authentic Trappist Product.”

Trappist monks have been brewing beer since the 1600’s… enough time to truly perfect their product. Originally, the monks brewed beer to feed the community, but now, Trappist breweries also brew beer to fund their works and good causes.

As an authentic Trappist beer, Chimay is brewed within the walls of a Trappist monastery, under the control and responsibility of the community of monks. The income from Chimay brews provides for a major portion of the surrounding community and social service.

While you might know a little more about Trappist brews now, this has only scratched the surface. Bobo is absolutely legendary in the Trappist beer community, and knows all of the ins-and-outs of this fascinating beer. So make sure that you stop by on Thursday, and pick his brain– and for the monk’s sake, try Chimay!
